Prince Philip is one of the most famous supporters and keepers of this tradition.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme was established in 1956 by Prince Philip at the suggestion of Kurt Hahn.

The latter himself had been awarded many honors, including an Olympic gold medal for Great Britain in rowing at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

Hahn, who attended Balliol College of Oxford University, created Gordonstoun School in 1934 on his principles while studying there.

At Gordonstoun, students are taught to be responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
